Science

At Rokesly Junior School, we aim for all our children to foster a love of science so they can engage with the world around them, be healthy and make valuable contributions to society, taking the most of opportunities that exist. Our children are encouraged to be curious and discover more. We aim to support our children in becoming life-long learners by enabling them to ask questions, experiment, and work both independently and collaboratively to solve problems.

The aims in the National Curriculum are to ensure all pupils:

  • develop scientific knowledge and conceptual understanding through the specific disciplines of biology, chemistry and physics
  • develop understanding of the nature, processes and methods of science through different types of science enquiries that help them to answer scientific questions about the world around them
  • are equipped with the scientific knowledge required to understand the uses and implications of science, today and for the future

The science curriculum at Rokesly Junior School has been carefully designed to consider our school context, as well as important, current science initiatives. Our curriculum is designed to ensure that children are able to be resourceful and acquire key scientific knowledge through practical experiences; using equipment, conducting experiments, building arguments and explaining concepts confidently. Each topic is mapped out to enable the children to acquire and develop the key knowledge that has been identified from the National Curriculum alongside progression in the ‘working scientifically’ skills expectations. In addition, the layering of our curriculum is carefully planned to ensure the children develop the necessary skills in English and maths, and enrich their vocabulary through our science lessons. Where possible, cross-curricular and enrichment opportunities are used to ensure contextual relevance and support our teaching.
