English

At Rokesly we believe that a high quality education in English will support all children in developing into effective communicators who can speak, read and write fluently to communicate their ideas and emotions.  In addition to this we encourage children to respectfully question, evaluate and challenge texts and the spoken word they encounter, drawing on previous learning.  We believe that developing all the skills of the English language is fundamental to success in other areas of the curriculum, the workplace and in participating fully as a positive member of society.

Reading plays an important part in this as it not only enables pupils to acquire and build on knowledge and intellect, but also through well-chosen texts expands vocabulary and horizons and inspires pupils to develop culturally, emotionally, socially and spiritually.  We have developed a curriculum that introduces a rich and varied range of texts that reference our great literacy heritage but also draws on modern and global authors to enable us to represent the multi-cultural society we live in and provide opportunities to discuss important issues and moral dilemmas, challenging stereotypes and discrimination.

We believe that children should be confident and fluent in writing for a variety of purposes and aim to provide ‘real life’ opportunities for them to experience the power of written communication.  We nurture a culture where children take pride in their writing, adapting their language and style for a range of contexts and understanding that writing can often be a long and complex process where stamina and self-reflection are needed.

We place a great deal of emphasis on speaking and listening and our aim is for all children to be confident in presenting, discussion, debating, asking and answering questions.  Listening and responding to the opinions of others is regarded as important as speaking.

Our aim at Rokesly is that all pupils:

  • read and write fluently, confidently and with good understanding, both for pleasure and for information.
  • become confident speakers who understand the importance of listening, reflecting and responding to what others say.
  • develop a wide vocabulary, an understanding of grammar and a knowledge of linguistic conventions for reading, writing and spoken language.
  • write and speak clearly and coherently, adapting language and style for a range of contexts, purposes and audiences.
  • appreciate our rich and varied literary heritage and literature from other cultures.
  • use questioning, discussion, presentation and debate to reflect on the opinions of others and thereby develop their understanding in all areas of the curriculum.
